Lila's Hope~Together We Can Make A Difference.

My name is Holley Brown and I am starting a nonprofit organization called Lila’s Hope.This organization is set up for the sole purpose of feeding orphans in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

My husband and I returned from Africa because we are adopting a beautiful 4- year-old little girl from Ethiopia. Our lives were forever changed over our stay in Africa. Upon visiting the orphanage we quickly came to realize that the lack of food is the biggest issue facing these innocent children.

Each day, most of the children are given a very small amount of food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. This is all that the orphanage can afford due to the extreme case of poverty throughout the city. It costs the orphanage almost all of their funds just to provide a roof over the children’s heads.

While visiting our daughter Niguesse (her American name will be Lila Grace), the biggest challenge that we faced with her, revolved entirely around food. During meal time, she would inhale her food so quickly because she was in fear that it would go away and she did not know if it would return or if she would ever get anymore. She began hording food in her pockets and always wanted to know where the food was at all times. We realized that Lila was trying to seek security in food. We then made her a small purse where she could always carry around her peanut butter crackers and granola bars. After giving her this “food security purse” little by little she was able to get over her fear of the absence of food.

The goal of this organization is to feed all of the children in Lila’s orphanage, and then branch out to feed the other orphanages within Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Our adoption agency currently works with around five orphanages in Ethiopia.

Getting things to Ethiopia is extremely difficult due to their lack of addresses, transportation and the mail system. Through our adoption agency, we have found two wonderful individuals that are willing to help Lila's Hope. There names are Travis and Andrea and they are missionaries from the United States that are currently living near the orphanage in Addis Ababa.

The plan is to collect donations through our website and wire all monies directly to Travis and Andrea. They will then go to the local market and purchase the food on a weekly basis for the orphanage. We are currently working on a menu/food schedule to better meet the nutritional needs of the children. I (Holley Brown) have a degree in Early Childhood Education and Nutrition and feel equipped to make nutritional decisions to meet the needs of the children.

Before we begin purchasing food, we must first purchase a refrigerator and get it delivered. Fresh meat, vegetables and fruit are far cheeper than canned non-perishable foods. As addressed before, food deliveries will be made once a week and all children will be provided a sufficient meal for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I am also going to post a list of the food that we will be purchasing along with the quantities and pricing so you have a better understanding of how you money will be spent.
